Unit Volunteer

Got a warm, friendly personality and smile with a big heart? Got a set of arms that gives hugs in all sizes? We're looking for a jack of all trades and a master of none to help adopt a whole unit of residents! This unit volunteer will help residents read mail, pass out water, assist residents to and from activities and the Beauty Shop, take residents for walks, sit on the porch and watch the birds with residents and meet many special requests which provide that personal, caring touch to our residents' lives.

Sunday Evening Baked Goods
|

Calling all cooks and bakers! The third Sunday night of each month, the residents enjoy a fresh homemade treat compliments of a volunteer within the community. Volunteers bake cookies, brownies, cake or whatever, package it into 80 individual servings and deliver it to Asbury Care Center, where it is served to the nursing home residents as an evening snack. Snoezelen Volunteer
|
Snoezelen is a multi-sensory experience that combines sight, sound and smell to awaken the senses and create an atmosphere in which our physically and metally challenged nursing home residents are free to relax, explore and communicate. Volunteers are needed to help facilitate residents' experiences as they visit the Snoezelen Room. Skills: An open, caring heart, patience and flexibility. Primp and Pamper Volunteer

Enjoy helping others look their best? Our ladies love wearing makeup and fingernail polish and enjoy being "pampered" as volunteers provide these finishing touches. Volunteers will be trained in infection control procedures for makeup applications. Staff do the nail trimming while volunteers help shape and polish. Pianist/Keyboardist or Organist

Share the magic in your fingers as you play the tunes for resident Sing Alongs. We've got the music, you've got the talent. Can we get together? Music touches most of our residents' lives and is the most popular activity. If you don't do Sing Alongs, how about playing background music for special events? For our organist, we need a rare breed of musician who enhances any worship experience! Organists are needed to lead our nursing home and retirement congregations in worship. Volunteer openings are available for a commitment as minimal as one Sunday a month either at 11:00 AM or 4:30 PM. Services are 30-60 minutes in length. Got a way with needle and thread? Enjoy mending while listening to others reminisce? A personal mender is needed to do small mending projects for residents who have visual deficits. Junior Volunteers

Between the ages of 13 and 18 and looking for a fun place to volunteer? Volunteer opportunities are available for those wanting to spend 2-4 hours a couple of times a month working with the elderly. Learn the joys of spending time with the elderly, while you also learn skills in working with seniors with physical limitations. Youth need to be outgoing, willing to initiate conversations and interactions with seniors, show some initiative and have a positive up-beat spirit. Handyman

Here's a behind the scenes job that makes a tremendous impact on the quality of care. There's limited resident contact, but lots to do. Every facility keeps a "honey do" list that never seems to get done. Hanging pictures, building shelves or cabinets, a trellis or game booth, fiddle games for residents with dementia are just a few of the opportunities available. Where are you, "Mr. (or Ms.) Fix It?" Golf Cart Drivers

Fair weather drivers needed for facility's 6 man golf cart to take residents on rides through the beautiful gardens at Aldersgate. These rides are a hit with many residents who can no longer get out of the facility on their own steam. Must be at least 18 years of age. Love to cook or bake? So do many of our residents who seldom get to do so anymore. Cooking classes offer that hands-on, sensory experience of creating something from nothing. Ceramics Assistant

Looking for a volunteer who would like to assist residents with their ceramics projects. Need an upbeat, tactful person who can motivate residents to do their best work. No skills required. On the job training available. The ceramics assistant helps residents choose greenware projects according to their abilities, encourages decision making in choice of paint colors, provides an extra set of eyes to encourage quality work, loads and fires the kiln. Bridge Club Volunteer

Love playing bridge? Why not fill in as a fourth and enable our nursing home residents to continue playing this game that is beloved by them as well. The group meets weekly on Mondays for about 1 hour. Volunteers are needed to help get the foursome together and to encourage the players as they participate. Bird Mobile

The bird lady of Asbury needs help in caring for the many birds that grace the aviaries at Asbury. Canaries, zebra finches, society finces, cockatiels, parakeets, even a blue Indian Ring Neck can be found in this facility. Bird sounds fill the air and the residents love watching the cycle of life as new babies are born. Come listen to a resident talk about their bird as your help them clean their bird cage. Take a cockatiel on your hand or shoulder to visit a room-bound resident. Even the cats want to help as the Bird Mobile makes it's rounds cleaning cages. Bingo Caller

If Bingo is your game, then why not share the fun with our residents. Callers are needed to lead Bingo games for residents at all levels of care. If you don't have a loud voice, a microphone will help you project your voice. Friendly, fun loving personality required. Games scheduled at least once a month, as convenient for your schedule. Art Memories Volunteer

Looking for a creative, artsy person to lead our Art Memories group or to assist our Art Therapist. Small art projects are presented to the nursing home residents to nuture their creative spirits. Extra help is needed to encourage residents and assist them as needed to enable them to participate to their fullest in creating a finished piece of art. Work with the volunteer leader of this group to develop new projects for the residents to take on. It's a fun way to release your creative spirit and to encourage seniors to do the same! Skills: Fine motor skills with your hands as you may be the "fingers" of a resident who no longer has this ability. Elder residents want to learn how to paint with watercolors or acrylics. Looking for an instructor who can teach the basics and encourage those who may be more familiar with these mediums. Classes can be set up at the convenience of the instructor. Help our Seniors develop their creative spirit through painting. You won't find a more appreciative or fun group with which to work! Skills: Knowledge of basic watercolor and/or acrylic painting techniques. Patience and the ability to share your knowledge is necessary. If your family is spread all over the globe and you want your children to experience the joys of having a grandparent or extended local family, consider adopting a resident! So many residents have outlived their families or their families live too far away to visit frequently. They would love to have a visit from you and your family. Visits can be scheduled at your convenience - days, nights or weekends. Can you spare at least 1 day a month to love someone who feels unloved? Adopt a Garden

Got a green thumb, but no place to let it shine? We've got a garden for you! There are several gardens that need someone to love them. Weeding, pruning and clipping can be therapy for the gardener and the resident who may no longer be able to garden, but enjoys watching someone else do it while talking to them. Help a resident regain the pride of growing plants or vegetables as you assist them with planting, watering and tending to their garden.
