Yvette Porterfield named Nurse of the Year
6/1/2011
Yvette Porterfield, Director of Nursing at Aldersgate United Methodist Retirement Community, has been awarded the 2011 Nurse of the Year Award by the North Carolina Association of Non-Profit Homes for the Aging (NCANPHA).
The award recognizes outstanding service provided by a nurse possessing outstanding leadership and supervisory skills, knowledge of nursing requirements for state compliance, and characteristics that promote quality of care, resident dignity, respect and independence while meeting the residents’ psychological, social, emotional, physical and spiritual needs.
Porterfield, who has been Director of Nursing at Aldersgate for 17 years, was nominated for her outstanding care and leadership.
“Yvette’s gentle manner and kind heart, combined with her clinical knowledge and integrative leadership style, has created an environment of staff that provides high quality care within an atmosphere of love and compassion,” said Suzanne Pugh, President of Aldersgate United Methodist Retirement Community.
During her time with Aldersgate, Porterfield’s leadership has been critical to adopting new programs and methodologies benefitting seniors. In the mid ‘90s, for instance, she was one of the first Eden Alternative associates, working closely with founder Bill Thomas on what was then a novel philosophy. In 2008, she was instrumental in the certification of Asbury Care Center, Aldersgate’s skilled nursing facility, for Medicare, as well as in the certification and start-up of Aldersgate at Home, Aldersgate’s home care program, in 2010.
Congratulations to Yvette for this amazing honor!
